A few weeks ago we had some old college friends come down to visit us, in Richmond, VA, and they brought their newly adopted puppy “Carmela” with them.  Of course, being concerned parents we asked if the puppy had all of its vaccinations, health checkups, and all seemed okay.  A few days later Mr. Pajama aka Sushi started to cough and seemed under the weather… we didn’t think anything of it at first but then he started really coughing and we started to get really worried.  Mind you, this is all happening over labor day weekend and of course we had other plans but the pooches come first!  I called a friend, who is a vet, Dr. Cohen to ask him what he thought we should do.  Acting on his advice we ended up spending most of Saturday afternoon and night at the emergency veterinarian getting Sushi looked at.

The vet came back and finally told us that Sushi had Bordetella (fancy for kennel cough) and put him on a cough suppressant and anti-biotic.  He started getting better but then ended up giving it to his brother Espy… could it get any worse?  To make a long story short both dogs ended up having to be on medicine for about 10 days, but we got through it and everyone is back to normal!

Obviously, this taught us a lesson to keep the boys away from puppies of any kind until any illness that might be present comes out!
