Sushi Got His Nails Cut

Posted by admin on September 26th, 2008

Sushi got his nails cut tonight and boy was it a chore.  Even though he is a Pug he is extremely strong and holding him in place whilst trying to cut his nails is quite burdensome!  My wife and I finally devised a new technique of me holding him on his back while she attempts to clip the nails.  This is all done with a blanket fully covering me because he likes to scratch like crazy and when the nails are sharp it really really hurts.  Espy is a lot easier to work with probably because of his age and the fact that he knows it is going to happen no matter how hard he tries to escape it.  This chore is about as difficult as bath time and teeth brushing for the boys, but it is a necessity.

It’s funny that I actually saw an infomercial for a new tool called “Pedi-Paws” which I guess is a motorized filing/sanding system that you insert the dog’s nail(s) into.  I like the concept I just wonder if it would be any less offensive to either of them.  If any of you out in the internet world have any advice on how to cut nails easily or if these new sanding type devices work please let us know!

The Economy

Posted by admin on September 23rd, 2008

I don’t know if you’re like me, but the economy is pretty scary right now!  In the last couple of years I have noticed that the dollar doesn’t buy as much overseas, ice cream cartons have become mysteriously smaller, and fortune 500 companies disappear over the weekend.

I hope that this truly is “cyclical” which is what most people who are older than me think, but who really knows?  The US seems to be getting further and further into debt and spending more money than ever.  I don’t know how this affects all of us in the long run, but it is worth thinking about….

I notice things close to me like homes for sale in my neighborhood, the amount of people out to dinner, people spending money on “toys”.  I have also noticed that people that would not ordinarily have to worry about money are having to get part time jobs so that their kids can live the way they are used to.  Part of me says not to worry about it and go on with daily life, but part of me also says that not paying attention to it is like ignoring a freight train coming head on!

In the long run, I hope that people continue to work to get by and that the economy picks up soon so that this way of life is just temporary!

A Full Moon

Posted by admin on September 18th, 2008

Last night my wife and I went to bed early and it was if our dogs were possessed!  We couldn’t figure out why they were so fidgety and restless.  They typically go to bed with us and might chew on a bone or something for 10-20 minutes and then pass out; but last night was very different.  Sushi was on the bed then jumped off the bed, then Espy wanted to chew on something, then Sushi wanted to chew on something.

This cycle went on and on, then came the barking and howling which lasted another solid hour.  After a while we shut our bedroom blinds and everything seemed to go back to normal.  Thinking back on it it was a full moon and we think that this had something to do with the behavior.  Once the boys had a “black” environment they seemed to be fine.  After this happened I did some research on the net and found that there are studies out there that suggest humans and all types of animals have tendencies to behave more “hyper” or stranger during full moons and times surrounding full moons than at any other time.  These studies suggest that gravitational forces tied to the moon influence our (animals and humans) water balance.  These imbalances tend to cause changes in behavior.

I guess I could find a study proving or disproving anything but I do know our dogs’ typical behavior and this was definitely not it.  I hadn’t really payed attention to it as much as last night in the past because they were particulary out of whack…..
